Hello old chaps. Welcome to Girls on Film Friday. I’ve chosen to profile Gillian Zinser, an on-screen goddess who embodies a great deal of the style and attitude that accompanies our signature grunge-bohemian (grungehemian?!) aesthetic. G Zinz is an actress and model by trade but while best known for her stint playing surfer babe Ivy Sullivan in American teen hit 90210, I feel that this California belle is most noteworthy for her bodacious fashion sense. Her off-screen style has not gone unnoticed by brands keen to work with her due to her natural enigmatic and free spirited presence and one can’t help noticing that when she has done modelling work her choices of label have always complemented a preconceived and established personal style that she has confidently kept at the centre of projects chosen on the basis of a shared aesthetic vision.
‘Gimme Shelter’ Planet Blue X Foam Magazine Lookbook, with Gillian Zinser
This first lookbook which, due to its playful nature and incorporation of childlike props has long been an inspiration of mine when it comes to solid lifestyle branding was shot back in 2012 by the sweet bohemian clothing label Planet Blue in collaboration with Foam Magazine to rep the label’s summer collection. Riding on the back of the height of her 90210 fame the edgy lookbook, which was appropriately named after the rolling stones song perfectly captured G Zin’s So Cal, bohemian, rock and roll surf chick style. Gillian Zinser for InStyle Germany, shot by Grace Huang
This next editorial was shot by Grace Huang for InStyle Germany. I really love this shoot for sticking with Zinser’s signature bohemian aesthetic but giving it a more pulled together urban vibe. The chunky boots, and hipster cut boyfriend jeans make for a cool andro look which suggests comfort and ease while the floppy hats and heavy accessories add a touch of dressed up, glam femininity.
The G Zinz style directory- let’s be thorough now shall we?
Full Boho Zinser– G zinz does full boho like no other. Her bohemian style basically involves piling a lot of stuff on top of a lot of other stuff then dying her witch scag ends (my housemate’s term for a dip dye) crazy colours. Her collection of shabby chic hats that err more on the side of shabbiness make me drool. But not in a hungry way. I’d never lick one of her hats, god only knows where they’ve been.
Grunge/ rocker Zinser– Here I give you rock and roll G Zinz. Once again it’s all about the layering and mixing up beaten up, distressed pieces like denim and faded band tees with the odd bit of bad girl bling. Studs, chains, sequins ans sheens are a must. This girl is always one to have her trusty flannel shirts and hoodies at hand and rocks at creating the I’m-doing-the-walk-of-shame-in-style look.
