I just had to name this look after the new Radiohead song “Burn the Witch” which came out last week. This track has grown on me more and more with each listen. It’s urgent sense of rising tension, conveyed through frantic, repetitive strings really hooks you in. It feels pretty appropriate for this outfit which makes me feel totally potent and expansive -so very “Mellisandre” from Game of Thrones. The maxi dress/ maxi coat combo just does it for me. It’s so simple but when I step out enveloped in billowing swathes of fabric I feel like I can own any situation. I think it’s something to do with being a tiny person, a person that’s always had people comment on how little I am. When I was a kid I’d stamp my feet petulantly and say ‘I’m big I am!’ Now I just wear voluminous clothes.
I got the Band of Gypsies dress in a sale at Topshop a few years back after having had my eye on it for a while. I don’t usually buy highstreet pieces but their stuff really stands out to me from time to time. This patchwork style maxi, while made up of very “highstreet” prints, stands out due to its well combined trio of floral prints and gorgeous cut. The prints, while eye bogglingly busy work together perfectly due to their complimentary colour schemes and the lace up details up the side of the dress add a real enticing flare to the cut. I found this coat in a charity shop for £15 and it remains my absolute fave. I wore it all through winter. It’s made of genuine cashmere wool with a faux fur trim which makes it super snug and super chic! I had to snap it in an outfit before I put it into hibernation over summer.
I hope you’ve all been enjoying the fabulous May sun and pushing on into your summer wardrobes!
